Acupuncture At Lumena Clinic

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a gentle, time‑tested therapy rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to help relieve pain, reduce tension, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

At Lumena Clinic, we use acupuncture alongside osteopathy to offer a truly holistic approach to your health – treating not just the symptoms, but the whole person.

How does acupuncture work?

Needling specific points on the body stimulates sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This triggers the release of natural pain‑relieving substances, such as endorphins, which help reduce discomfort and promote a sense of wellbeing. Many patients also find acupuncture deeply relaxing, which can be beneficial for stress‑related conditions.

Acupuncture and osteopathy – working together

Osteopathy looks at the body as a connected system, where tension in one area can affect another. Acupuncture complements this approach by helping to release deep‑seated tension, reduce inflammation, and calm the nervous system. Used together, these two therapies can support your body more effectively than either one alone.

Whether you’re dealing with a long‑standing condition or a recent injury, we will tailor the treatment to your needs – using osteopathy, acupuncture, or both.

What can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions. Our patients seek acupuncture for:

Back, neck, and shoulder pain

Headaches and migraines

Joint pain and stiffness

Stress, anxiety, and poor sleep

Digestive issues

Hormonal imbalances, including menopause symptoms

Fertility support

General wellbeing and maintenance

What to expect during your session

Your first acupuncture appointment will last up to 90 minutes. This gives us time to listen, understand your concerns, and create a treatment plan tailored to you – including your first treatment.

Follow‑up sessions typically last 45 minutes to an hour.

All needles are single‑use, sterile, and gently inserted. We also offer additional techniques if appropriate, such as cupping, gua sha, or heat therapy – and we will always explain what we are doing and why.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients notice improvement within 3–5 sessions. We usually recommend a course of treatment rather than a one‑off session, as this gives the body time to respond and allows for lasting change. Treatment might start weekly, then gradually become less frequent as your condition improves.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book an acupuncture session without a referral or a diagnosis. If you’re not sure whether acupuncture is right for you, we offer a free telephone chat to discuss your symptoms and answer any questions.
